11 days a place to crash

So far my friends and I have a place to sleep for eleven of the 21 days we’ll be in Italy.
    Galileo's Finger
Our travel goals are to mingle mingle mingle and then to hang out some more.  All of us are much more interested in “living” in Italy for our time there than we are in visiting museums and monuments...but don’t get me wrong, I do want to see the art.  Not so much the relics, but the art in the context of the people and the landscape that begat it.

We will start with a five day tour of Rome and we’ll be staying at Marco’s place.  We’ll do the Vatican tour and picnic in the ruins and other stuff not yet determined.

Our next leg has us taking the train to Cinque Terre where we’ll hike around and perhaps sail those shiny blue waters.  Hopefully before we leave, we’ll have found a place to sleep.

After Cinque Terre we’re somehow getting ourselves to Umbertide where we’ll stay for seven days at a lovely place called El Marsam where we’ll lounge around, do a festival or two and mostly just do some of that aforementioned mingling.  I hope to paint a bit, Carol wants to cook and Nancy wants to do Nancy stuff that if we’re lucky that will include making lovely music.

Next, our paths will diverge.  Carol will travel to the heel of Italy to visit her extended family while Nancy and I go to Venice.  We don’t know where we’ll stay yet, but we have every intention of visiting a few landmarks and mostly hanging out in little bistros and watching the world go by.  I hope to find time to take find a fine boat tour and see the place from the water without a gondolier yammerin’ in my ear.

Somewhere in there I am trying mighty hard to figure out how to make a secret leap up to the land of windmills.

At the end of our trip, Nancy and I will catch il treno back to Rome, meet up with Carol at Marco’s to spend the night and then head back to the US where hopefully we will have been missed.
